The swordsman reeled his mighty blade back, ripping it from from flesh with a sickening sound as the unlucky opponent dropped to his knees and then fell face first onto the ground. With a quick swiping motion, Fenris flung off some of the blood before sheathing the greatsword onto his back once more, the fighting done. Those who'd been brave enough to face him lied dead on the floor, whereas the craven, or perhaps even smarter of the bandits had scattered, running off to live another day. He didn't bother to give chase, not particularly concerned with petty thieves barely able to carry their weapons, let alone properly wield them. If nothing else, perhaps their encounter with the 'bloody elf' would wisen them up and convince them to take a less hazardous occupation. Not that he cared either way. It wasn't in his current job description to take care of them, and had they not foolishly tried to gang up on him, he would have left them off on their merry little way.
He sighed at the thought, reaching up to wipe some of the splattered blood off his face with the back of his arm, careful to not dirty the favor Hawke had given him years ago. He never seemed to take it off, wearing it along with her family crest with pride, even though she had a tendency to piss him off more than anyone else. Then again she also had the benefit of living after those arguments unlike anyone else, so there was that. Ironically thinking about that was enough to remind him how ready he was to return home and see the pain in the ass again, getting quite tired of waiting for the ship to set sail across the Waking Sea. If there was another ship that was heading out, he would have certainly taken his business elsewhere, but it seemed the captain was well aware and by extension, in no hurry to get moving until he and his crew were ready.
He'd have said he was thankful of the time killer those bandits had offered, but quite frankly he could have done without it, especially with the new gash that cut uncomfortably across his markings on his bicep. No doubt she'd be fussing over it once he did reach Kirkwall's shores, but for now he supposed he could make sure she didn't have to fuss too much as he made his way towards the nearest healer or clinic. If nothing else he could get it cleaned and bandaged he supposed, not needing to make a big deal of it. It was a little scratch as far as he was concerned, but he supposed it would be best if it didn't end up infected. He'd never hear the end of it from Zaria!
With that reluctantly settled, he focused on getting fixed up a bit while he waited for evening to arrive, hopeful that the sailors offering to take him home wouldn't be too unbearably drunk after their visit to the tavern. Oh who was he kidding? He was just going to have to make sure to get him a bottle of wine for the trip and hope it was enough to keep his nerves calmed as they made the trip home. NOTES ; Fenris casually killing people on the streets like it's no big deal. He'd insist that they started it though! XD

"Nice swordswork," she said to the elf, one hand on her hip and the Cousland sword and shield on her back. She tossed him a small sack of coins. "Thanks for taking care of them," she added. She was in full armor, but it was obvious she wasn't originally meant to be out here on the streets.
"Lady Cousland, that's--" one of the soldiers with her began. Her eyes narrowed and she snapped around to give him a hard glare.
"I don't care who or what he is right now," she said to the guardsman. "He killed thieves that you haven't been able to find in days. Know that I will speak to the Guard-Captain about this." Her tone was low and cold, possibly more frightening than if she had raised her voice.
"Understood," the guardsman said, backing down.
"Good. Now, you three follow the thieves that lived," she ordered, pointing to a few of the guardsmen following her. "We need to find their nest." The three guards nodded and separated from the group, vanishing into Highever proper. Elyssa took a closer look at the elf, spotting the red fabric around one wrist and the crest at his belt.
"That crest isn't Ferelden," she observed. "Not smooth enough to be Orlesian. Marcher then?" she asked. "Elyssa Cousland, Captain of the Highever Castle guard." She felt no reason to tell him that she was also the leader of Highever's army. They hadn't needed the army since the hole in the sky was closed and the demons left them all alone. Hopefully they wouldn't need it for a while yet.

Oh good. It appeared he had company, though the elf hardly looked phased by the guards who'd approached, perhaps far too used to it than he should have been. Came with the territory, especially when people seemed to take offense for some reason for him cleaning up their messes. Surprisingly he seemed to luck out this time, the apparent Captain actually thanking him which obviously wasn't something he was used to as he quirked a curious brow, though caught the sack of coins that was tossed his direction, testing it's weight. Yeah, this was a first. He looked rather skeptical for a moment longer, wondering if this were a trick, before tucking the coin away.
He stayed silent as the Lady snapped at one of her guardsmen, finding it almost amusing as she scolded the man like a child. But soon enough she'd sent some guards to find the other thieves, and had she not spoke up, he would have surely left himself, expecting that to be the end of it. Instead it appeared she wished to speak more, pointing out the crest he'd taken to wearing ever since he and Hawke had started their relationship. He hadn't taken on the name, but Zaria had made it rather clear that he was a part of her family now. "Very observant, Lady Cousland," he began. "It's a wonder thieves are able to escape your notice at all." That probably sounded more sarcastic than he intended. He had a awful habit of accidentally offending people. Still, his words weren't meant to be malicious, a compliment hidden in there. He was just thankful it was the crest she'd pointed out and not the markings that laced his skin.
Since Elyssa introduced herself, he supposed it would be polite to do the same, yes? Since she was one of the kinder of captains (Aveline included!) he'd come across, at least towards him anyway, he figured it would be best to make a good impression, especially if he intended to cross this way again in the future. "My name is Fenris, sword for hire." he offered simply, crossing his arms over his chest, not too worried about sharing his shady occupation. "Though perhaps you already know of me?" he tilt his head, regarding the little spat between her and one of her soldiers. "We probably could have met under better circumstances." Such as him not being covered in the blood of the thieves they'd apparently been hunting down. He almost wanted to comment on the quality of her guard, but decided that would in fact be insulting. He'd just give them the benefit of the doubt and assume this was the first time the bandits had boldly went after someone in broad daylight. NOTES ; Fenris will put that coin to good use lol

His response brought a small grin to her face. "I don't come down into the city as much as I'd like to," she admitted. "Someone else is Captain of the city guard, unfortunately, but I like to know whose visiting my city." When he introduced herself, recognition flashed across her face.
"From the book Take of the Champion?" she asked, sounding surprised. "I knew the actual war was real, but I didn't think that much of the book was. Explains the crest." She sighed, one hand rubbing the back of her neck. "These bandits aren't usually this stupid... Leadership must've changed." She turned to one of the remaining guards. "Report to the city's Guard-Captain. Let her know that leadership might have changed hands in the thieves she's been hunting."
"Yes ma'am." The guardsman in question ran off, leaving Elyssa with only one guardsman at her side. Elyssa opened her mouth to speak when she suddenly turned and drew her sword.
"There she is! And with only one guard too!" a voice called happily. Suddenly, they were surrounded.
"Cowards. Can't come after me unless you're in a group, huh?" she challenged, taking on a fighting stance. "You brats are nothing compared to Ostagar!" She and the remaining guardsman readied their swords, and the assassins attacked.
(Assassins with the Howe crest are still targeting her. Go figure.)

Maybe he was kind of hopeful that his name wasn't that recognizable? Well regardless it appeared she did in fact know him. "Regrettably so." he agreed with a sigh, worried about what Varric had possibly written about him. He'd lived a good chunk of the Tale, and had heard enough from the Champion herself, so he'd never seen the point of actually reading it. Now though he may have to consider skimming through to make sure there wasn't anything particularly damning in there. "I'd be careful, Varric is known to embellish quite a bit." he warned.
As far as the bandits were concerned, he merely shook his head. "Desperation, stupidity... I'm used to being targeted, more than I care to admit." It wasn't necessarily his reputation that made him a target he thought, simply because of him being a lone elf. You'd think the sword would be enough of an indication that he wasn't worth it, but he supposed they might have thought he'd stolen it. In their defense, many were surprised he could even wield such a hefty thing, but he was far stronger than he looked.
Pleasant as this conversation was, he was ready to continue on, about to apologize for cutting this short when a voice cut through the crowd. Suddenly they were surrounded and he growled in frustration. He just couldn't catch a break today. Fortunately for him, they seemed more focused on her. Unfortunately for him, tempted as he was he couldn't just leave. So when the Assassins began their assault, Fenris decided to make quick work of three of them, ripping his blade from his back and cleaving through them in a wide arc, sending them reeling back as they clutched their fresh wounds. He didn't say a word, didn't even advance, just gave them a cold harsh glare and daring them to try again as his markings began to glow.
While reluctant, he was fighting alongside Elyssa and her remaining guard. He'd surely gone mad being around Zaria for too long, but here he was trying to play hero in a fight that wasn't his own. NOTES ; Yes, he's blaming Hawke for him having a conscience

Elyssa blocked with her shield and struck with her sword, killing two men with one strike. She blocked another attack, and sent another assassin reeling with a blow to the head from her hilt. She was a seasoned warrior, a champion in her own right. The three that Fenris wounded aimed for her instead, and she killed them quickly too. The remaining assassin, instead of targeting her, began to run. Elyssa's guard wanted to follow, but she stopped him with a simple shake of her head and went to search one of the bodies. She stood, holding a small object in her hand.
"The crest of the Howe family," she muttered. She scoffed and tossed the crest to the guardsman, who caught it. "The Howes haven't been part of Ferelden nobility in twenty years. They need to get over it already..." She sheathed her sword and returned her shield to its place on her back.
"Lady Cousland, should I send a report to the Teyrn?" the guardsman asked.
"No, I'll report to him personally later," she said with a sigh. "They're still using the Howe name to send assassins after us... This is getting pathetic. And this was the weakest batch yet."
At least my children are away, she found herself thinking. Hopefully they wouldn't be found at Skyhold. But she herself couldn't disappear from Highever for too long without arousing people's curiosity. Another sigh.
"Thanks again for your help, Fenris," she said finally. "You're probably trying to get back to Kirkwall, right? There's a boat heading that way in an hour, if you're interested. Not one of the fastest, but the boat and her captain are reliable. And he doesn't ask questions," she added as a side note. She'd noticed the glowing bit, but hadn't bothered mentioning it. "Long as you don't cause trouble, and have coin or trade for the trip, he won't give you any either." She looked over her shoulder and pointed at the ship in question.

Well maybe she hadn't needed his help after all! The Lady seemed quite capable of holding her own in a battle and soon enough the assassins lied dead at their feet, save for one who managed to escape. He watched the lone man scatter out of sight before lowering his sword, waiting for a few moments just to be sure before sheathing it again, hopefully for the last time today. He sighed at the thought, watching curiously as she checked the bodies. Howe? Why did that name seem familiar? He knew some of the history of Ferelden, but wasn't exactly well-versed. Apparently it was a disgraced family by the sounds of it, and considering they were sending assassins, he couldn't imagine why.
He gave but a simple nod at the thanks, deeming it rather unnecessary. He did however pay closer attention as she guessed where he was heading, even going as far as to suggest a ship that would be leaving much sooner than what he could assume his current ship would. Needless to say, it was quite tempting, though he couldn't help but scoff when she mentioned being trouble, his markings beginning to dull. "Do I seem like the troublesome sort, or should I be questioning Varric the next time I see him?" He shook his head at the thought. As long as this Captain didn't give him any trouble, he'd show him the same courtesy, simple as that. But he decided to try and hold his tongue as far as that was concerned. "Thank you for bringing it to my attention though..." He'd just have to hunt down the smuggler and hope he hadn't already spent the coin he'd paid him.
As he was considering all this though, ready to part ways once again, a rumble in the sky caught his attention, and further in the distance he could see dark clouds approaching. "Fasta vass..." he hissed under his breath, knowing exactly what that meant. He could only hope it wasn't a serious storm, or at the very least passed quickly. "Your Captain wouldn't perhaps be bold enough to brave a storm, would he?" He was only joking of course... Mostly. While he wanted to return to Hawke as soon as possible, he wasn't foolish enough to dare something so stupid. He knew the smuggler would use it as yet another excuse to hold him waiting, if not ask double the price which just was not worth it. NOTES ; There's your storm \o/

"Just didn't think you'd want any questions about the whole glowing thing," she explained simply. The wind picked up suddenly, and Elyssa turned to see the clouds approaching. "Damn..." she muttered, glaring at the clouds. She brought her fingers to her lips and whistled, a shrill sound that cut through the wind to a large area of the docks. This caught a lot of attention, which was the purpose of course.
"Get everything secured! That storm's coming in fast!" she called across the docks, the wind carrying her voice. She glanced back at Fenris. "This is gonna sound harsh, but either help or get out of the way!" she told him before running for the docks. She caught the end of a rope that was tossed to her and tied it to the dock, helping tie down some cargo that had just been unloaded. There was a flurry of activity as everyone worked to tie down anything that wasn't already secured.
It wasn't long before the clouds were on them and the sky broke open, drenching everything. Most people had already taken shelter inside. The wind picked up as the rain started, and a small box went flying over Elyssa's head and into the water. "Damn. This is bad," she muttered. A few of the city guardsmen came running over, fighting the wind. "Help get those ships tied down!" she ordered. "You! Help secure what's already unloaded!" Her attention was focused entirely on getting the docks secured so there would only be minimal damage.

The glowing thing. Yeah, he tried not to show it off all that often, so she had nothing to be concerned about in that regard, so long as no one was foolish enough to piss him off that much. But that was pointless now as the wind had picked up and almost as if the Maker himself was trying to fuck him over, the storm just seemed to start up fast and it was getting nasty quick. Not hesitating in the slightest, Elyssa started shouting orders, even going as far as to order him to help or get out of the way. Harsh indeed! But not something he couldn't handle.
He weighed his options for only a second before joining in. He wouldn't be getting out of here if the whole dock was destroyed anyway, so might as well do what he could to make sure he got out of her sooner rather than later, right? The things he did for love. He growled at the thought as he grabbed onto a rope and tried to fasten things down. Soon enough he was completely soaked and the waves were starting to pick up with the wind, making the situation far more erratic. He kept a level-head through it all though, enough so that when someone slipped and started to fall into the roaring sea, Fenris had caught them and threw them back towards solid ground.
The storm was still raging on by time the docks were finally secured, lost cargo along with debris lapped up by the sea. It could have been worse, Fenris had decided, brushing his hair out of his face as he looked at the mess, ignoring the burning sensation in his arm as he appeared to have torn the stitching he'd received earlier. Now that the adrenaline was dying down, he was starting to realize just how exhausting that had been, but he kept a pretty decent poker-face as he surveyed the scene one last time and retrieved his sword which fortunately hadn't been stolen in all the fray. NOTES; Fenris needs a warm bath lol

Her hair was plastered to her head and sticking to her face. And the temperature was dropping. Thankfully the windows near the docks had been boarded up for a day already in preparation for this storm. She brushed her hair out of her face and motioned for everyone who was left on the docks to get inside. She looked over at Fenris and waved for him to follow them. She followed the guardsmen into a building far enough from the docks, well-built to withstand storms like this. The sound of the wind quieted a bit when she got inside, and she moved to a spot close to the fire that had been built.
"This storm wasn't supposed to roll in until tomorrow," she admitted when Fenris was nearby again. She was busy wringing the water out of her hair. "From what we've been told, this storm should be more wind than anything else... Hopefully it'll pass by nightfall." Fergus was expecting her back by dinner. Of course, if the storm was hitting here, odds are it was going to hit the castle soon enough. She knew she didn't have to worry about Highever Castle, thankfully. It'd been standing for around 800 years, one storm wasn't going to knock it over. "Until it does, none of us are going anywhere."
"We found some towels in a crate that got stored here, My Lady," one of the guardsmen said, handing one to Elyssa and holding one out to Fenris. "Looks like they were set to head to the castle tomorrow morning."
"That's alright," she said, taking the towel and throwing it over her head. "Fergus will understand." She started using the towel to dry her hair. Her armor had protected most of her clothing, but it was still cold. "Make sure they get distributed to as many people as possible." The guard nodded and walked away. There weren't all that many people in the small building though, maybe eight or ten at most, but the room was on the small side. Elyssa found a spot on the floor and removed her shield before sitting down, using the towel to wipe the water off the shield. It was in good condition considering how old it was. She took care drying it off due to its personal importance.

Since Lady Cousland seemed to be getting ready to head out, Fenris was considering the same, noticing her waving his direction and motioning for him to follow. It was either this or walk back to the tavern and hope they still had room for him. Not really wanting to be stuck in this rain any longer than he had. While the small space was rather crowded, it was better than the cold harsh winds outside by far, so he doubted he'd have too much trouble settling in.
Like the others, he found himself inching closer to the fire to try and get warm. "The storm had other plans, clearly." It arrived fast and hit hard. Even inside he could hear the wind and rain pounding onto the building under the murmur of sailors and guardsmen alike talking among themselves. He wasn't too keen on staying here for too long, but he knew she was right. They were better off staying in place until the storm settled down. So with a sigh he ran his fingers through his hair and out of his face, exposing the additional marks on his forehead in the process. He sort of drifted off as he stared into the fire until he was eventually handed a towel, effectively snapping him out of it.
Using the towel he patted himself as dry as he could, before turning to his sword as he sat down in a free space to settle in till it was safe to leave. "Not where you expected to find yourself is it, Lady Cousland?" Not that she wasn't fairing well enough, seeming hardly phased by it, though he had no doubts she would have preferred a much more warm and inviting castle to hide out the storm. He certainly would have, but he was quite used to hiding out in cramped places. Quite frankly this was hardly the worst place he had to call shelter. "If I was the faithful sort, I would have assumed someone out there is trying to stir things up." That was the kind of things he'd say to start something with Sebastian. Not that the Chantry Brother would have been too offended. In fact he was rather understanding and not as incredibly annoying as most of the religious types he'd come across. He'd never admit it, but he kind of missed the companions he'd made over his time with Hawke. NOTES ; Fenris trying to make conversation. He's not very good at it lol

"I'm pretty adaptable," she said with a small smile. "This line of work, you have to be." She finished drying her shield and passed the towel on to the next person. "The only difference between waiting the storm out here versus at home is who's waiting for me when I get back." She returned her shield to its place on her back and drew her sword, pulling a rag out of her pocket at the same time. She started wiping the blood off her sword, her hand moving gently down the blade.
She laughed at Fenris's comment about faith. "Maybe someone along the Marcher side is stirring up trouble," she joked. She was going to say more when the sound of the storm got louder for a moment as someone opened the door and closed it again. There were a few surprised shouts as people moved out of the way, and then a pair of mabari came through the crowd toward Elyssa. She laughed again and sheathed her sword as the hounds approached her, holding a hand out to each of them.
"How did you two find me in this storm?" she asked the hounds cheerfully. "You could have gone back to the castle and waited there." Kenai barked once in response. "Yeah, yeah," Elyssa responded. A towel got dropped on the older of the two mabari, and Elyssa grabbed it and began drying the hound off. She moved up onto her knees to get a better angle, laughing when the younger hound tried to lick her. "Karina, stop it," she laughed.
At least they both had short coats. By the time Elyssa had dried Kenai, Karina was dry too. Once Elyssa had sat back against the wall, Kenai and Karina sat beside her, and she ended up with Kenai's head in her lap. "Oh, sorry, this is Kenai and Karina," she said to Fenris as way of introduction. She put a hand on Kenai's head, between the ears, and smiled lovingly down at him.

Fenris simply nodded, kind of impressed if he was being truthful. There weren't many nobles he knew of that cared to get their hands dirty, and he decided her dutiful personality was the reason he was able to converse without getting too annoyed. Were she pompous and self-righteous, no doubt he wouldn't even be here. Though whether that was a good thing or not was left to be decided as the elf finished up with his sword, setting it aside and finally tending to his arm which appeared to have stopped bleeding at least. If nothing else, he could agree to her last statement, hopeful he wouldn't be gone yet another month and keep Hawke waiting much longer.
"I wouldn't be surprised." he admitted. Considering all the shit he'd gone through in Kirkwall alone, you'd think he would have insisted he and Zaria move elsewhere, away from all the crazy that their home seemed to attract. It was his home now, though if he wanted to be honest, anywhere with Hawke would be. He dropped that thought soon after though as the hounds had entered, causing him to snap out of it. Right, dog lords. How could he have forgotten? He of course used that term affectionately, having no problem with the beasts... So long as they weren't turned on him anyway. They weren't the sort of dogs you wanted to fight against and he knew that well enough. But when they were with their masters, they could act like puppies, these two prime examples of that as the Lady cooed over them and dried them off. For a moment you could almost forget they were very powerful and dangerous beasts.
He was content with leaving her and her dogs be, only she seemed to remember he was there again, introducing them. He nodded in acknowledgement as he looked over the Mabari duo once again. "Fine hounds." Loyal too, evidently, as they had decided to follow her, even through this tough storm. He figured he should keep his thoughts about them to himself, not because he personally saw them as bad, but most of his knowledge of them consisted of facing them on the field or the way that other kingdoms regarded Ferelden and their dogs with disregard, so he'd at least try not to accidentally offend a room full of Fereldans, at least not until going outside this little building was a bit more safe he supposed.
"Seems like they were worried about you." he commented instead as he sat back against the nearby wall, half tempted to take himself a quick nap. He wouldn't be able to do so comfortably while there were strangers about, however. Not that he expected them to try anything while his guard was down but... The elf just really wasn't the trusting sort. NOTES ; On one hand, he lowkey thinks they are cute. On the other there is hardly enough room for him to defend himself if one were to decide to attack him for no reason lol He'll be fine, don't mind him!

Elyssa nodded and looked down at Kenai with almost sad eyes. "Kenai's been at my side since before Ostagar," she said quietly. "I should have retired him years ago, honestly." She sighed softly, then glanced around the room, her eyes lingering on the boarded-up windows. She was keeping her eyes and ears open in the event that something changed in the storm. Storms like this tended to bring tornadoes.
"They won't attack without my order," she assured him. "You have no reason to fear either of my hounds." She kept her hand on Kenai's head. The wind was whistling around the building, shaking the walls a bit, but the fire was keeping the space warm.
Conversations began to die down as people found places to sit. Some began to doze off as the storm raged around them. The guards took turns resting and keeping watch on the storm itself, alert for any signs of waterspouts. Elyssa found herself dozing off when she wasn't on watch.
A few hours later, the wind began to die down. She opened the door and noticed that the rain had let up too. "Alright everyone, the storm's let up," she announced. The civilians began to file out of the building, while Elyssa and the other guards stayed put. "Inspect the docks and get a damage report to the city's guard-captain. Make sure I get one too," she told them.
"Yes ma'am!" they responded before exiting the building as well. She was the last to leave, followed by her two hounds. The sun was setting as she surveyed the docks, taking note of the obvious damage. There didn't seem to be much, thankfully, though there were a lot of boxes in the water. Already the guards were working on hauling the floating cargo back ashore. Ship captains were inspecting their vessels for damage, though that seemed minimal.
"For as bad as this storm was, it didn't do much damage," she observed, moving to help out as well.

Now Ostagar he was aware of, though the story still had a bit of conflict depending on who was telling it, some still seeming to be in full fledged support of Loghain. If he really wanted the true story, he supposed he could ask her, but he'd decided not to indulge this time, seeing no real point to it. Many years had passed since then and the spoils went to the victors, end of story. "Retire a warhound?" he asked with a tilt of his head. It made about as much sense as him retiring quite honestly, though he supposed he could understand the care behind the notion, especially if the dog was getting worn in his years. Fenris on the other hand was quite determined that if he were to die, it would not be lying in a bed. The idea of living a long life was preferable, no doubt, but if given the choice, he'd rather die with his sword in hand like the warrior that he was.
At the assurance that the dogs would not attack, Fenris actually chuckled. "I have plenty of reason to fear them." he assured, knowing the damage they could do. Getting hunted down by a couple of Mabari had been a good enough learning experience, after all and watching a man quite literally get torn to shreds was proof of their sheer power. "But I know how intelligent they are, and I know they wont attack unless ordered." he agreed, looking to the canines who looked quite comfortable lounging near their master. "They are fascinating creatures... and extremely deadly when they want to be." He respected them, but he wasn't foolish enough to belittle them as completely harmless, under control or not. Still, he appreciated the assurance nonetheless.
Eventually he closed his eyes, not quite asleep just yet, but taking the moment to rest. He was still rather tired by time the storm had calmed, but he felt better knowing that it was indeed over with, emerging shortly after the others once he retrieved his sword and fastened it to his back. Though the storm quite obviously did sweep through, the dock completely drenched, there really wasn't that much damage which was something he himself was definitely thankful for. "Perhaps the Champion wont have my head after all," he thought out loud. A bit delayed, but surely she wouldn't be too worried if he'd arrived just a day later than originally planned. Fortunately for him, the smuggler was among the Captains checking his ship. Deciding to step away from the Lady for a moment, he approached him, not surprised in the least to find he'd already spent the coin he'd offered, but after a 'kind' discussion, the man assured him they'd ship out the moment his crew could fully survey the ship for damage.
