Varalas is a man who won't take your shit, who won't let you walk all over him. He'll play nice and civil, all jokes and large smiles until you look down on him, until you try to use him. When you do look down on him, though, when you do try to use him, the smile drops and he reminds you that there's a damn good reason he is where he is.

Despite his unwillingness to take shit and his frequently provocative nature, Varalas can be a very warm and friendly man. He enjoys nothing more than a good time (although a good time can be anything from sharing a few drinks with friends to getting into a good, hard fight) and spending time with with friends and family. And to his friends and family, Varalas is incredibly loyal. He tries his best to write to everyone as often as possible. He tries to visit as well, but it's hard to leave Ferelden when duty ties him there, so he encourages friends in other countries to visit him instead. Duty tends to tie them to their countries as well, though.

And as for his work, his senechal will tell you he works far too hard and that he needs to take better care of himself. However, he won't tell you that Varalas frequently won't sleep due to nightmares of the blight, that he wakes up yelling, unsure of where he is or if the blight still rages, that he skips meal after meal because he forgets that his body does need food even if he doesn't feel hungry.

Varalas has plenty of acquaintances, but he's hesitant to call most people his friends. There's the people he fought the blight and/or the Architect with, who helped him every step of the way, and they're most certainly his friends, but others? Others not so much. He worries they're kind to him because of his status and the people he's friends with. So he doesn't really get close to many people. This isn't to say he's unfriendly, though, because that'd be a blatant mischaracterization. He's warm, kind, and friendly with everyone as long as they don't give him a reason not to be, but that doesn't mean he's friends with them. He can talk a lot and say little about himself. He's an expert at directing conversations away from him and tricking people into thinking they know more about him than they really do.[break][break]

To those that manage to gain his trust, to convince him that they're here for him and not his titles or connections, he is much more open. He keeps his secrets still, but he opens up more about the things he's done, the things he hopes to do, and the things he's felt and feels. He's much more casual and much more honest.

Varalas has as many enemies as he does friends. People whose loved ones were on the wrong side of his blade, Loghain sympathizers, people who felt he abandoned Ferelden during the fight with Corypheus, to name quite a few. It's uncertain how many would actually seek his life, though. He is, after all, a hero and a friend of many in high places. Plenty do make their hatred known in other ways. Harsh rumors and biting words to his face are the most common. There's the occasional duel, too.

(Due to the lack of DA:O canons and my desire to not force romance plots onto anyone, especially canons, Varalas is assumed unromanced through DA:O UNLESS decided otherwise. DA:O canon players are more than welcome to talk to me about this.)[break][break]

Varalas isn't exactly experienced in conventional romantic relationships, whether by human or dalish standards. His only "relationship" was with Morrigan and that was anything but conventional. They fucked to save his life, but he stuck around for as long as he could to raise his son. That being said, Varalas is a little reluctant to the idea of a romantic relationship with someone. He and Morrigan might not be in love, but he most certainly loves Kieran. He already left him to attend to his duties as Warden-Commander, he doesn't want to push his son away by getting into a relationship with someone. That isn't to say he's closed himself off to them, just reluctant.

I don't have a lot of ideas here, but maybe clanmates would be fun? It'd be really cool to do some Varalas/Merrill stuff since they're from the same clan! Clanmates in general, though, and fellow dalish and fellow wardens, too! Give me all the warden plots. Hella bonus points if they were at The Battle of Denerim, although they wouldn't be a warden then. Really anyone who was at Denerim during the final battle gets hella bonus points.

So, Varalas shouldn't be alarmed when a bird flies into the Amaranthine Fortress and magically transforms into his son. It's happened before. In fact, over the period of three years, it probably happens quite frequently.

It's just Kieran striving to give both of his parents fair and equal treatment. Just as he pops into Orlais every so often to share with Morrigan the latest ancient secret he's uncovered, he feels obliged to let his father know that, yes, he's still alive and, no, he hasn't traumatized any templars with his shapeshifting tricks so as to avoid a life-sentence in a Circle. Whether or not that is strictly true, well ...

I imagine that matters between these two stay rather chill and simple. Mainly because Kieran wants it to be that way. For Varalas not to become entangled in his affairs. Mostly to avoid the awkward explanation of hunting down his vengeful elven goddess grandmother in order to save his mother and maybe prevent the return of the other Elven gods and the consequential destruction of their world as they know it to be.

Yeah. Kieran really doesn't want to have that talk.

He'd rather Varalas believe that his son is caught up in a stint of rebelliousness against society's doctrine against magic with a yearning to be more closely connected to his elven roots than his human ancestry.

[attr="class","inhere2"] Varalas is most certainly always looking forward to his visits! He probably drops everything he can to spend time with him when he visits.

And I think a simple, chill relationship is definitely good. Varalas isn't going to try to force their relationship to be a certain way and probably lets Kieran lead and direct things. He doesn't want to be overbearing or any kind of annoyance to Kieran.

As for the secrecy of what Kieran's doing, Varalas definitely respects that. He has his own secrets and he's also probably used to it from Morrigan, too. He'd probably occasionally mention that if he needs help or anything he's there for him, but he doesn't really ask questions. He'd be concerned, no doubt, but he'll probably respect Kieran's decisions no matter what.

Honestly I'm not certain whether she'll be so shiny and peppy and happy it hurts or if she'll want to know the ins and outs of being a Gray Warden. Not because she wants to be one, but because she wants to learn about them. Her own interactions with Gray Wardens are limited (and for good reason), but to have one wandering the halls of Skyhold?! And an actual one!?!??! (~~goddamnit Blackwall~~) That is an opportunity! If at nothing else, we can use her desire to learn more about Wardens to see if they'll hit it off or if they'll wanna stab/freeze each other to death... or something in-between, of course.

I see the two of them having a very uneasy relationship, what with Canicus showing up out of nowhere with lots of questions and murky ties to Tevinter. I also think Canicus would be likely to actively seek out the Hero of Fereldan, not necessarily for a formal audience (he doesn't really have any standing to ask for one anyway), but to try to snag an opportunity for an informal conversation. I'm not entirely sure how to set a scene, but he has many, many questions about darkspawn and the blight, especially from a magical standpoint. It also wouldn't be out of place for Canicus to be in Amaranthine or that general area, considering he travels constantly, so there's some flexibility there.

Maybe someone in Amaranthine sees Canicus, realizes he's from tevinter, and reports him to Varalas "just in case?" Varalas isn't exactly fond of questioning random people, but if it'll get people to relax then...

On the other hand, perhaps Canicus goes to vigil's keep and requests and audience using the fact that he's from tevinter as leverage?

I think we might be able to combine the two in a fun way. Say Canicus was trying to pull strings in the area and do the leveraging to get that audience, which is what triggers someone reporting him to Varalas. Sort of like 'that Tevinter is trying too hard, something is up.' It could culminate in an especially suspicious meeting, whether Var seeks him out or grants the audience 'unexpectedly.' I see a lot of side-eyeing in their futures.

Unless I'm quite mistaken (which would, of course, surprise no one) we're the only DA:O characters on the board presently? Basically I am up for whatever-the-fluff you would like to do! Okay, I'm doing this now cause I've been meaning to do this for a while. Since he killed Arl Howe, I feel like cooperation between Highever's Teyrn's little sister and the Arl of Amaranthine would be pretty good. Since she was at both Ostagar and Denerim, in charge of Highever's troops both times. Even if he doesn't remember the Lady Cousland, she remembers him.

Oh, but he would've known she was alive after Ostagar because she was being sheltered by Arl Eamon until the Landsmeet, which was when she revealed herself to the rest of the nobility.
