STAND YOUR GROUND, THE DAWN WILL COME
POSITIVE - experimental- he's often trying out new tactics for attacks or even playing around with Thedas's limited tech when he can. it's a hobby. - charismatic- or, at least, he tries to be - he's rather playful, and won't hesitate to play fairly harmless pranks on others or join in a children's game. - Kailen is fairly shrewd. when he marks a target, he spends anywhere from days to two weeks inspecting their homes or the areas he is to kill them in, looking over every flaw in order to see what can give him an advantage or cause his downfall. conversely, he's also paranoid as hell. - ever the adventurer, this guy won't hesitate to jump into even the most dangerous cave in search of something. | LIKES - money - new inventions - scented candles - exploring - things with soft/smooth textures (i.e. bread dough, fluffy blankets, etc.) DISLIKES - humans - crowds and nosy people - strawberries - big bugs (he screams when he sees those huge-ass spiders) - sleeping | NEGATIVE - he's a huge asshole. a ginormous dick. he complains constantly and refuses to treat anyone with respect. - must be level 200000 friend to unlock his tragic backstory - materialistic. anything that'll get him gold, he'll do with little to no thought - he has major trust issues, and is prone to stabbing people in the back on the premise that he's doing it before they can do it to him. - too proud for his own good. he wouldn't accept anyone's help unless he was dying. - did I mention that he's super paranoid? |

[PTab=ABOUT]
THE NIGHT IS LONG AND THE PATH IS DARK
a little reminder
You were born in the depths of winter, inside a crowded slum known as an alienage. The city you cannot remember; all you can see when you look back are faded buildings, hundreds of your kind crowding the streets, and the smell of death in the air. When you were born, a plague had begun to take hold of the alienage, and your family had already lost two children; a brother and a sister you would never meet. Father said you would not make it past your first month, and your mother stood defiant against his prediction, coddling you and struggling to keep you healthy. They didn't name you until your first birthday, when you proved to be a survivor. Kailen, after your late brother. With you clinging tightly to your mother's hand, you eventually left the city before the end of your fifth year, moving on to Denerim, where you spent the rest of your childhood. It was bigger than your former home. Not by much, of course, but you felt so much more alive in that prison than you can remember feeling in the old one. You gained few friends, however, and were often labeled a problem child due to how often you engaged in fights. Mother was always worried about you, fearing that your behavior would bring you to the attention of the human guards. Father could care less about what happened to you, and practically disappeared from your life when you turned eight, joining with the thieves guild to make coin.
He was never home, but his money was. It kept you and Mother alive, and sometimes, when father had stolen from a particularly wealthy noble, you could even afford new clothing. Of course, there were downsides to your father being a known thief. Although many elves were happy to know that he was causing the humans trouble, they worried. They feared his activities could be linked back to other members of the alienage. No one would sell them out, of course, but Kailen found himself losing almost all of the few friends he'd made when their parents decided to keep their children away from the mess that was the Harel family. It hurt to be snubbed by the few people you liked. Now the only people who would play with you were your mother and a few cats that you fed with scraps from your own measly dinner plate.
When you turned ten, your mother reluctantly allowed you to wander outside of the alienage, with the promise that he would keep his head down and go with someone else. You ignored both of those rules, and strolled in and out whenever you pleased. Your father often met you on the streets when you wandered, and was far kinder to you than he had been in your earlier years. He'd sneak you treats, ones you knew were stolen, but you'd eat them anyway, and he'd tell you of his exploits. You begged for him to teach you how to be a thief too, longing to spend more time with him, and after some time, he agreed. He taught you to use daggers, taught you to unlock chests and doors, and how to walk unseen. Things were good for a long time, until you were fifteen. Until Mother found out. She forbid you to see him again, told your father to stay away from her son. They argued for a long time, over you. Nothing was hidden by the thin walls of your room. Father wanted you to join the guild with him. Mother thought you were not only too young, but touched in the head too.
Angry, you left your room and joined the argument, complaining that you were just as smart as any child in the alienage. Mother told you she just wanted to protect you, and you furiously replied that you could take care of yourself. You left with Father that night, only looking back once at your mother standing at the front door, her face hard and painted with tears. Guilt would not haunt you until you grew old.
Father introduced you to a human woman who helped you hone your rogue skills, who became something of a mentor to you. She wasn't like the guards that scowled at the men and women in your alienage home. She treated you as an equal. You thought in childish naivety that you loved her. You told her all of your secrets, followed her like a lost puppy, and in the end, you paid for it. Seventeen, and you suffered your first betrayal. You were both on a job, stealing from the Bann's home, and things went wrong. The guards were alerted, and in your rush to escape she tripped you, laughing a little as she escaped with no penalty. You, meanwhile, were thrown into the Bann's private jail, not even given a trial. No one cared- it was just an elf, after all. You waited for days, praying for a rescue, before you finally realized that none was coming. You made your own way out, taking your first lives as you made a mad dash to the exit. You went back to Father, but he wasn't there when you arrived. A coworker of your father's told you he had left with the human woman and the treasure, and you realized the folly of your trust.
They'd both left you to your death, and a vengeful part of you wanted revenge. With what materials you could gather, you left Denerim behind completely, following their tracks. You trailed them for months, and when you finally found them in the Hinterlands, you killed the human woman silently, erasing her existence and her name from your memory. Then, you turned on your father, holding him down and letting out your anger in the from of tears and screams. He said you had always been so pathetic, and told you that you should have seen this coming. People were always changing, and nobody had anyone's best interests at heart ever. You asked if he would leave you to die again if given the chance, and he laughed. It told you all you needed to know. You broke his legs and left him alone in the wilderness, presumably to die.
You quickly discovered after that that killing was the only thing you did well. You killed people for money, killed darkspawn for money when the blight occurred, and then went right back to killing people when the whole fiasco was over. When a bright light appeared in the sky, you did nothing to help. You simply went about business as usual, and the world kept turning without your help. Some Dalish man saved the world, but nothing really changed. People stayed the same. Money stayed the same.
You, however? You have changed. Scars mar your body and your mind. The mother you went to apologize to all those years ago is dead now, killed by the darkspawn in their last attack on Denerim. You visit her mediocre grave every few years, though you don't really know why. You cry at night, sometimes, over memories and thoughts you can't seem to stop no matter what you do. You leave your problems be. Laugh at the irony when people send assassins after you for killing their kin. In little ways, though, you do stay the same. You laugh at dumb jokes. You twitch and bounce when you feel anxious, and people still dislike your callous attitude. Life still offers the same glint of hope it always has, even with so many weights surrounding you.
So maybe the world can change. Maybe the optimists are truly right about the world... or maybe life is just as you think it is. Uncaring and cold. One day you'll uncover the truth, and on that day, you can rest easy.
misc. fun facts
- if he were in the modern world, he'd be diagnosed with autism. of course, thedas has like 0 idea what the fuck that is. he has no idea why people find some of his behavior (overstimulation from bright light or too many people, his occasional meltdowns, and lack of social skills) weird or otherwise. for him, it's all normal.
- tends to bounce his legs a lot, but can stand or sit still for long periods of time if necessary.
- he honestly likes hanging out with animals more than people. animals don't care if he's an elf.
- thinks that the dalish are pompous as all hell and would probably punch someone in the face if they told him that they were above the city elves in any way.
- speaks exclusively in sarcasm and passive-aggressive remarks
- he's bisexual as fuck
