[attr="class","ffs-box"] [attr="class","ffs-basic"] 25 human noble bard inquisition agent [attr="class","ffs-main"] FRIENDS Maybe you’ve seen this redhead occupying a table at your local tavern, trading a song or a story or two for a warm meal and a couple of coins, the atmosphere jovial with her impish smile and bawdy jokes. Perhaps you know her better as a lady adorned in the refinery of silks and jewels. A formidable player upon the battleground of waltzes, poisonous words and shadows, unafraid of the vipers circling about her ankles. To those allied to the Inquisition she is Starling. A useful friend to keep close. If you are brave enough to trust a bard, that is.
For Starling, friends aren’t the easiest commodity to keep. Often, it is when she is being encouraged to trust that Starling becomes the most suspicious. Still, as has been her experience so far, she does tend to befriend all sorts. The only common trait being that they are true to themselves. Decent manners also tend to go a long ways with this Orlesian.
It’s difficult for Starling to drop her guard completely, even when in the company of those that she genuinely cares about. More than once she has been forced to kill a friend, and it never gets easier. She never wants to, even when she must. She’d rather protect her friends. From the world. From themselves. From her.
ENEMIES She’s a spy, and arguably of one of the worst of sorts. After all, Orlesian bards do far more than eavesdrop and exchange secrets. They manipulate, they seek out weakness, no matter how vulnerable, and they lead astray. They seduce and beguile. And they torture and they murder, their kills not always quick and merciful. Their bodies are a weapon of sharpened well-maintained steel, themselves as cold and merciless as the Grand Game in which the Orlesian aristocracy uses them in order to play. And Starling considers herself to be one of the better players.
Her enemies might be nameless but they are many, and, had her patron not often encouraged her to return open animosity with the fatality of a blade, they would be a legion.
Understandably, Starling is quite suspicious of other and is inclined to assume the worst until she is given a reason not to form such an assumption. She is also merciless when encountered by an enemy. To her, it is a wiser course of action to utterly crush an opponent than it is to risk the chance that they may return to retaliate. It isn’t always a popular outlook. Yet, the world in which she exists in does not reward mercy.
ROMANCE From her early days of training to be a bard, Starling’s patron encouraged her to be open to the act of seducing and bedding both men and women. And, whilst Starling often feels inclined to admire both the beauty and the grace of other women, she bares a stronger attraction towards men. In particular, gentlemen with an impeccable grasp of style. Dashing rouges. Confident dancing partners. Fereldens.
Getting Starling into bed is easy. Keeping her there is the challenge.
As an agent of the Inquisition, she must be cautious that a potential lover does not seek the secrets privy to her position, or that she compromises her loyalty and sense of duty. Perhaps a more pressing concern of Starling’s is her noble heritage. Being Comtesse Madeline Fontaine’s only remaining heir, Starling does not have the luxury of choosing her betrothed, likely that decision was made by her aunt years ago. (Message me if you’re interested in an arranged marriage). Romance, therefore, is a highly complicated affair for Starling. i swear one day i'll find the effort to use pretty plotter reply templates but today is not that day
can i just say how much i love her?? like bards are super cool on their own but then there's starling and the way you write her she's amazing okay let's get to plots.
the inquisition's a big organisation and with their dramatic downsize cyrlan is eager to begin (continue, rather) the slow and tedious process of getting to know every member. i imagine that he's always been rather curious about the workings of these orlesian bards, and now that there's one within the inquisition, you can count on him to grasp that chance. he's probably lowkey intimidated by how she dons mask after mask so easily and navigates the game because he, for one, has absolutely no idea how to do so despite having experienced a particularly exciting series of events at the winter palace (something he does not necessarily want to repeat). also, if she wishes, he can probably teach her the jumble of elven and common tongues that the dalish often use.
add/subtract as you wish!! <3

Unlike most Orlesians, Starling isn't devout. She's isn't overly vocal about her beliefs or, rather, lack thereof. However, perhaps a clearer hint of this trait of hers is how she treats the Inquisitor. Where others might declare him both blessed and a herald, fawning over him to win his favor, Starling sees only a mortal man. Remarkable and powerful, certainly. But, nevertheless, mortal. The respect that she shows him is not tarnished with fear.
Her respect was earned by the fetes that she witnessed Cyrlan accomplish, or later heard of his triumphs from trusted sources and allies. He might not know how to best play at the Grand Game or any other similar elaborate plays of schemes and deception, but Starling acknowledges a different strength of equal value within him. It was for that reason that she continued to stay within the Inquisition's ranks even as others chose to leave in the wake of the Dragon's Breath fiasco. Cyrlan has Starling's loyalty. And, in many ways, she's come to view him as her patron, following the death of the man that had commanded her, years ago during that dark night in the Winter Palace.
If she makes him uneasy, then that is good. Bards should be looked upon with some measure of fear. And perhaps that'll provide Cyrlan with some level of caution should he seek Starling's assistance, or to influence Leliana in how she makes use of her spy network. Of course, she'll happily and readily provide Cyrlan with answers to any questions posed to her about bards or Orlais or the Grand Game. Likely with the inclusion of small teasing jabs and sweetened jokes (I'm thinking banter similar to that exchanged between Isabella and Hawke) so perhaps her lack of fear towards the Inquisitor verges on being flawed.
And, should Cyrlan ever find himself drawn back into the politics of Thedasian nobility (which, I'm guessing might be likely what with Tevinter threatening both Orlais and Ferelden) Starling would genuinely want to put her skills directly in Cyrlan's hands, for him to make use of her as he sees fit. Whether as a spy or as a dancing instructor. Again, she thinks of Cyrlan as her patron. And she'll strike without mercy out at any noble who might attempt to touch him.
Starling would definitely take him up on any offer to teach her more about the elven language. Oh, and to also learn the odd traditional Dalish song. She could easily have any Orlesian baroness eating out of her hand after serenading a room with a Dalish love ballad. MADE BY ★MEULK

Wow look at these fancy plots already /SCREAMS
But she sounds amazing. I'm itching to get into some threads with this wily bard.
The two I have to offer are Merizyl and Harding. I imagine with them both based in Skyhold, she and Harding might possibly have run-ins (and perhaps not strictly professional ones either). The lil scout loves to dance and swap stories in taverns when she gets a free moment, though she might not have the grace and style that Starling boasts.
And we've talked a bit about Meri. He's not with the Inquisition and is currently making his way south from spending a while in Tevinter (because he doesn't want any part of that war nonsense but he can't easily escape it WHOOPS). He might be a bit trickier to come across, but maybe on her travels, Starling can meet him. The only thing about threading these two is I'm not sure, after reading more about her, that they'd get along super well?? Meri is a simple, cheerful fellow with a tragic past (lmao who doesn't have tragedy in their pasts around here) and in most cases he loves everyone, but he doesn't take kindly to being manipulated. Or taken advantage of. Or toyed with. But if that were to happen it would make for some fascinating writing, right?
Anyway -- I'm open to whatever! ;D

@harding & STARLING Lace might think that Starling is the more graceful partner between them but Starling believes that Lace has moves all her own that she can never come close to matching. For instance, Harding can strike like lightning with her arrows, taking her opponent out before they've even realized how dire their circumstance just became. Starling has to exert an unflinching sense of control and charm across a room to keep eyes from staring too closely, she can't just be invisible.
It would be a friendship of equal appreciation and admiration, and one that Starling would dearly cherish. Gingers need to stick together, after all. Also, she'd probably be willing to share what few memories about the Ferelden countryside from her childhood that she still recalls with Harding. Like how impossibly green the fields of the Bannorn seemed during the middle of summer. And she'd definitely want to sample some of that turnip-goat stew, but would probably be a little sad afterwards. Likely remembering her own parents.
The Fifth Blight was awful.
Still, she would definitely play a few songs upon her lute or sing a song and dance about with Lace during their free-time or whenever the mood strikes them. And maybe Starling has this awful habit of humming Scout Lace Harding whenever Harding enters a room. Hey, it's a terribly catchy song.
But, no, seriously, Lace is basically the Josephine to Starling's Leliana. She'll tear down anyone who even thinks about messing with her dwarf.
MADE BY ★MEULK And speaking about dwarfs, Merizyl and Starling, well ...
It could very well be that's she's basically the Anders to his Fenris.
Meri does not like being toyed with, but that's just the practice that Starling exercises upon everyone she encounters. It's not always malicious, usually Starling only has an agenda when she's in pursuit of a secret or, perhaps, someone. Often it's simply the only method that grants her a sense of trust towards another's intentions. She's suspicious. She's cynical. And she usually avoids being caught out ... but that would only lessen Meri's opinion of her. That he had to confront her with her deceptiveness rather than her confess and stop deliberately manipulating the situation.
It could be that some part of her needs to make amends. That she doesn't allow Merizyl to shake her until she's convinced him to change his mind, to at least like her although she'd honestly want him to see her as a friend. But it could also go completely differently. And, feeling spurned, she takes a sadistic level of satisfaction in getting under this dwarf's skin.
What could bring about an encounter between the two of them is a job. Merizyl is looking to claim a bounty that has been put out upon a certain person. And that person either has a mutual friend from Starling's past who has convinced her to use her skills as a bard to protect him, or he has a friend of a friend of the Inquisition and Leliana assigned Starling to watch this guy's back. Either way, it could make for an interesting first impression. MADE BY ★MEULK

Ack I love it all. Especially the part where the two ginger ladies bond over their memories from back home in Ferelden/Hinterlands. And like any good Fereldan, Lace of course knows how to make turnip-goat stew and they can dine together and Starling can play her a tune and it'll be so so great. If it's "Scout Lace Harding" Starling might hear some groaning and grumbling from the little dwarf but it's all in good fun.
I can promise you that Meri's intentions are pure, but that doesn't mean Starling will be as convinced. Right now he literally has NO agenda other than survival and trying to make his way in the great big world, with no family and very few friends to speak of. He's naturally inclined to trust people who seem half-decent, but if there's any game going on, he'll either try to shut her out or tell her outright that it's not okay with him. And I'm definitely cool with either of those scenarios -- no matter what, the conflicting interests will be fun to play with! Meri just won't know what to do with himself if he's got this pretty lady protecting his target and simultaneously trying to get him all confused in the head.

You know, I kind of see Star and Kahlia as being super-good friends, once they get past each other's walls. Since they both know how it feels to be betrayed, albeit different forms of betrayal, they'd both be super careful at first. And then, maybe, something happens to make one of them open up to the other, and they go from there?
