STAND YOUR GROUND, THE DAWN WILL COME
POSITIVE - Dorian is fairly book smart, thanks to all of the books he's read over his lifespan. He'd complain that most of what he read was 'dry and tasteless', but quite a bit still sticks with him. - Ever the outspoken one, Pavus will not hesitate to make his opinion known, which can be a dangerous thing in Tevinter. He's done many anti-slavery campaigns in the Magistrate, although he's been miserably outvoted every time he attempts to reform something. He's already had a few assassins targeted at him, which he honestly sees as an achievement. - Once he devotes himself to something, it'll take a lot to dissuade him and make him abandon the cause. Unfortunately (or fortunately, depending on how you look at it), in Tevinter's case, he's got no choice but to back off. As lovely as being a martyr sounds, Dorian enjoys living, and wouldn't like to have any more attempts on his life being made if he can help it. - Despite his slight ignorance, Dorian fights for the rights of the people who live in his mother country. Slavery is something he's been working to abolish ever since he gained his spot in the Magistrate, for instance. - He genuinely wants to help people, and has no problem actually going through with doing so. | LIKES - the smell of old books - fine wines - reading - dressing nicely - debates DISLIKES - the ocean - cold weather - most teas - messes - himself, probably | NEGATIVE - He's still rather ignorant. Despite his work with the Inquisition in the past, he's still struggling with the ideals he grew up with, and therefore is liable to make a complete ass out of himself. Especially when it comes to the Dalish. - He can be rather abrasive, due to his pompous attitude. - Dorian, bless his soul, can be stubborn as hell, especially when it comes to politics. Honestly, despite all the grey hairs Tevinter has given him, this stubbornness is the reason he's continued to try and make a difference in his home country, and is also the reason he's been stabbed multiple times, with poisoned blades, I might add. He refuses to give up on Tevinter thanks to it. - He is a drunkard, through and through. The drinking originally started as a coping mechanism for his consistent expulsion from circles he attended due to petty fights and the like, and morphed into something more controlling as time went by. It was certainly not helped by his parents' fairly verbally violent reaction to his sexuality and unwillingness to suppress said sexuality. - He deflects inquiries about himself like it's nobody's business. He doesn't like people knowing his problems, and will get very upset if they try to stick their nose into his business. |

[PTab=BIOGRAPHY]
THE NIGHT IS LONG AND THE PATH IS DARK
a brief history
Dorian was the only child born to Halward Pavus and Aquinea Thalrassian. His parents, like many other couples among the upper class in Tevinter, absolutely despised each other. It was no surprise to anyone that they'd decided to put all their eggs into a single basket, and hope that their singular heir did not suffer a premature death. Throughout his early childhood on his family estate in Qarinus, Dorian was left heavily in the care of the servants, seeing his parents only a couple of times a day, mostly for study or meals, and due to this, he befriended a few of his many caretakers. His parent's would one day boast of how quickly they had spotted Dorian's magical talent, but truly, this wasn't the case. The servant- a slave, actually, as Dorian would later realize- who'd been assigned to watch him one day was nearly the victim of fourth degree burns when the four year old was startled by them and subsequently had to dodge a small fireball. Which, by the way, made Dorian even more upset and understandably confused.
His parents were informed once Dorian was calmed, and they praised him for the fire he'd managed to start rather than scold him for it. It was a sign that he'd be a powerful mage one day, they said, and then proceeded to argue about who's blood had contributed to their son's early signs of magic. They argued a lot, honestly, about anything and everything, to the point where Dorian was ecstatic to be sent to the nearest circle for schooling a few years after the fire incident. His time there ended abruptly, when he got into a fight with another student, a magister's son, and injured him. He was expelled for his misdemeanor, earning him many a lecture from his parents before they shipped him off to another circle. By this time, Dorian was closing in on the age of sixteen, and under many expectations from his peers to show an interest in the 'fairer sex'. But he didn't. When the students his age started flirting with their peers or harassing the slaves that the schools he attended owned, Dorian found that he had little interest in women of any social class. Men, on the other hand, were a completely different can of worms.
Still, during his youth, Dorian had more troubles than just sexual interests. What took precedence in his mind was the fact that no matter what circle he attended, he was inevitably kicked out. Tutors would scowl just at the mention of his name. Dorian Pavus was labeled a problem child, through a mix of both his loud and fairly liberal views and youthful hot temper. It wasn't long before he was introduced to larger quantities of alcohol, either, from both parties his parents hosted and he therefore had to attend to his peers occasionally roping him into going to a tavern, it was little wonder that turning to alcohol during his rough times was such an appealing option. After the fifth circle he was kicked from, Dorian went on what can only be described as a bender, and after several days of near-constant inebriation, he was found by magister Gereon Alexius. To this day Dorian doesn't know what the man saw in him, but he took him in and offered to become his mentor. He found no reason to decline the offer, and the very angry letters from his father regarding his brief disappearance definitely made up his mind about staying at the Minrathous Circle, where Alexius was stationed. for a while rather than facing his fathers wrath.
While under the tutelage of Alexius, Dorian learned many things, and even created theories on time travel alongside the elder mage. During his time under Alexius's wing, he also confronted his sexuality, and confided in this to Gereon's son, Felix, whom he'd become friends with. To his utter delight, Felix didn't seem to care, and in fact was very supportive of him. This reaction would prove to be among the few good ones he'd ever receive, and the singular kind reaction that didn't result in flirting or a short-lived sexual relationship. It was still a few years, however, before Dorian even dared to consider telling his parents about his new revelation.
After four years under Alexius's guidance, Dorian became a fully-fledged Enchanter in the Minrathous Circle. He flourished in the position, becoming a mentor for a few apprentices himself, and continuing to work with Alexius on his theories. However, now approaching the age of twenty-eight, Dorian was being pressured by his parents. They'd found a suitable woman for him to marry, they announced, and arranged for them to meet. Livia Herathinos was her name, and from the moment the two of them were face-to-face, they despised each other. He knew he wouldn't have been able to marry her anyway, not if he wanted himself to be happy, but Livia grated on his nerves too much for him to even consider allowing himself to be chained to someone he held no attraction for.
He told his parents, once the Herathinos family had left. He explained that he couldn't- and wouldn't- marry Livia, that he held no attraction for women.
The reaction wasn't pretty. There'd been rumors, of course, that they'd heard of their son, rumors they'd chastised him for in letters, asking him to be careful of the masculine company he kept, but knowing that what they'd heard had been true had been a catalyst for a full-blown family feud. The resulting argument lasted for hours, and many tears were shed. Despite the anger festering among the small family, Dorian tried to keep things civil, though his bitterness over his parents' inability to accept their son for who he was seeped into nearly every word he said to them. This awkwardness lasted for a few more days, up until Dorian discovered his father was planning to perform a ritual... a blood ritual. One that would supposedly change him. That's when the true catastrophe occured. Dorian exploded on his father, and Halward lashed back. They both said a great many things that they'd later come to regret, but the last words Halward would say to his son for another two years were; "Get out. You are no son of mine."
Dorian returned to the Circle, and refused to communicate with his family any further, throwing himself into his studies. A year and six months passed before the next big problem arose. Alexius took off after a darkspawn raid took his wife and injured Felix. Even Dorian couldn't get the full story out of him when he went. What he did hear, however, were rumors, ones with evidence behind them. People said that the magister had been part of the Venatori, and was going to join them... so Dorian followed Alexius, intent on discovering his former mentor's true nature and, if he could manage such a feat, to stop the venatori. He left Tevinter, following the magister as he went, and before long things went to shit, a hole formed in the sky, and the rumors surrounding Alexius's allegiance turned out to be true. Two years since his fallout with his family, and suddenly, he was part of the Inquisition, working to defeat Corypheus.
He learned much, as part of the Inquisition, and gained new opinions on slavery and the like as a result. He reconnected with his family, as well, although it was with much reluctance on his part. Halward apologized many times over the course of their discussion, and honestly, Dorian forgave him. He could never find it within him to hate his father- especially when he'd spent so much of his life trying to impress him. Their relationship remained strained, however, even after Dorian returned to Tevinter after the death of Corypheus. Another two years passed, and Dorian was sent to Orlais as an ambassador to take part in the nasty affair that was to be the essential death, in his opinion, of the Inquisition. He received word only a few days after his arrival of his father's assassination... and of his new title. Magister. After the events among the southerners, Dorian bid his friends farewell, and returned to Tevinter to take his father's seat in the Magesterium, joining up with Maevris Tilani and multiple others to create a sizable party of forward-thinking magisters. Many of their reforms were never passed, but to their credit, the group never stopped trying.
And now, Tevinter is calling for war. He knows his country cannot fight both the south and the Qunari; that would be impossible. He's been very vocal in his disapproval for this action, and as such, has had quite the target painted upon his back. For the moment, at least, Dorian has left Tevinter with his mother to avoid yet another assassination attempt, and hopes to gain some aid from his old friends. Perhaps they could offer some protection or at least some needed insight on how to deal with this... issue.
misc.
- He's allergic to stripweed, a plant commonly used in teas
- He has a cat that he named Sparkler, after Varric's nickname for him. So yes, he did in fact name his pet after himself.
- He and his mother, Aquinea, are currently in Orlais. Aquinea is certainly not helping alleviate anyone's distrust of her or her son with her consistent jeering at the southerners.
- Dorian hopes to eventually make his way to Skyhold, or at the very least, Kirkwall. Any place with a friendly face would be welcome, at this point.
- His hair has gotten longer, and has quite a bit of grey in it now. The second part can be blamed on the Magistrate.
