STAND YOUR GROUND, THE DAWN WILL COME
POSITIVE - Dutiful In all walks of life, Leliana has been conscientious and attentive. Though this trait was perhaps watered down or occasionally superseded in her spirited youth, it has always been there. Leliana assumes the awesome responsibilities that her station requires with tenacity and unflinching precision. - Clever Wisdom's sly sister, Leliana has shown remarkable guile since she was very young. This natural proclivity to charm her way out of situations or navigate the social pitfalls of Orlais was honed to a razor edge by Marjolaine and has been in constant practice (discounting her time as a lay sister) since. Leliana's deviousness makes her a treacherous, wily and unnerving opponent in simple conversation, let alone warfare. Added to the vast wells of information she culls from her networks, she can read as omnipotent. - Passionate Leliana has always been passionate. What started off as a pure zest for life, music and tales was directed to the crafts of Bards upon meeting Marjolaine. After her betrayal, Leliana's devotion was turned inwardly and upwardly toward her relationship in the eyes of the Maker, and her faith. Leliana left Lothering with a deep-seated faith that, while it has been shaken in years hence, has never utterly faltered. In Cullen's own words, there would be no Inquisition without Leliana. Her passion extends to all realms, pursuits and causes that she deems worthy of it, and that passion has already been felt throughout all Thedas. - Experienced The Spymaster is in her forties now, and has been trained, and put into practice that training - as a Bard, as a lay sister, as the Left Hand of the Divine - since she was little more than a girl. Leliana's experience is invaluable. It gives her confidence in her decision-making, as well as a governed humility and caution; when to admit temporary defeat or make sometimes difficult concessions to wisely avoid repeating past mistakes. - Tactful Leliana was groomed to be a piece in the Game of Orlais. The Game is built upon trivialities, subtlety, flattery. Countless minuscule gears of etiquette in a machine of intrigue, conspiracy and blood. Within the Game, if one lacks tact and the ability to veil poison in honeyed grace or sugared lips, they're devoured by it. Leliana has taken the respect for delicate discretion that was taught to her by Marjolaine and brought it to the international scale. Her purdence passes on to her decisions and council for the Inquisition and informs her orders for her spies, allowing Leliana's hands and eyes and ears to navigate social climes of lethal nuances with the effortless dignity that only a Bard can cultivate. - Empathic She feels emotions very deeply, to her very core. Leliana has been able to put herself in another's emotional shoes since she was a girl, but after her time in the Lothering Chantry, that is doubly so. Many see the Spymaster of the Inquisition as a cold-hearted and mythic force of quiet deaths and stolen secrets. Unfeeling and indifferent. Only those closest to Leliana know that she has come to this point out of necessity, been molded into what first Divine Justinia, then the Inquisition needed her to be. She erects walls of ice because she feels so much and so deeply and so broadly. Leliana makes her damnable decisions and does what must be done to preserve those that she cares about, whether they be people or ideals. After the destruction at the Conclave, Leliana moved into realms of apathy as a coping mechanism to survive the guilt and mourning, and the questions that it gave rise to within her faith. Only through the members of the Inquisition, and the Inquisitor himself, was Leliana helped to mend, to part the glacial curtains that had closed over her soul and be softened by joy and love and hope again. - Brilliant The word may seem boastful, but it conveys the proper point. Leliana is exceptionally clever and talented. Not only is she intellectually superb, but from a practical standpoint her skill set is prodigious. Among her vast networks of spies, there may be women and men that have mastered a specific niche of espionage or combat beyond her abilities, but none are as well-versed or imposing across the board as the Nightingale. She is the summation of spycraft, able to yield results; where nimble feet and clever words fail, an arrow notched to a string or a blade sheathed between ribs suffice. - Protective Tied up in her empathy, Leliana is very defensive of people. This applies to every agent she possesses - in fact, it was care for her agents' well-being that helped Corypheus take Haven when Leliana pulled them in at the first sign of trouble, a decision she felt lasting guilt over - but even more so to those allies, colleagues and cherished ones she can count. Leliana would wade through the darkest mires of the Fade without hesitation, carry out unspeakable acts personally to preserve the lives of those dear to her. - Nurturing Since becoming the Left Hand of the Divine a very limited number would begin to attribute this adjective to Leliana. Yet, it remains true. The encouraging, thoughtful and supportive woman that once adventured with the Hero of Ferelden has not fled entirely. Leliana masks her nurturing nature often because she feels she must, to be seen as the Spymaster that the Inquisition needs and deserves. Still, this trait can peek through at the right time, or with the right people. Leliana will suggest a certain social course for her friends or give advice on what path to take in realms of friendship, romance and wardrobe. - Witty Sister Nightingale does have a sense of humor. It merely has become a sharper, dryer thing since she helped the Hero of Ferelden. She can banter and embark in witty repartee with the best of them, and many who aren't well-versed in her wit can be left wondering for days after the fact whether she actually was going to poison their mead or not. Leliana's humor becomes less prickly and more sincere, lighter, when in the right company - the Inquisitor, Cassandra, Josephine, Cullen or past friends, for example. | LIKES - Nugs Leliana always thought that these small creatures to be adorable, but after the Hero of Ferelden gifted her one during their adventuring together, she fell in love. Leliana has since used this first nug (named fondly "Schmooples") as the launching point to begin her closest-guarded hobby: the breeding and raising of nugs. She is quite protective of the creatures, and if anyone were to slaughter one - even accidentally - while on assignment, they would do well to pray that Leliana does not hear about it. - Fashion & Art Sister Nightingale was born and raised in the resplendent empire of Orlais, in the bosom of an Orleisan noblewoman, no less. She was nurtured with the observance of incomparable clothing and senses of fashion and awe-striking art as other children are with milk and honey. Leliana loves clothes and especially shoes. She's talented at comprising outfits that work with hers' and other people's body types to accentuate natural beauty and disguise physical shortcomings. Leliana is even known to work with tailors who help bring the concepts in her head into reality. Beyond wardrobe, Leliana has a soft spot in her heart for art in all of its forms. She is one to appreciate the poetic grace of Dalish ruins or the organic elegance of a rose who, despite all odds, managed to bloom in the cracks of a Ferelden gutter. - Music More so than fashion and art, Leliana cherishes music. She has always loved both to sing, and to hear wondrous tales. As a Bard, Leliana paired her admittedly lovely voice with ballads, weaving stories with song. Of late Leliana does not sing overmuch, but when she does it has an unnatural quality, so that the listener seems to hear an entire, unearthly orchestra unfolding around the syllables of her voice. - Banter Oh, does Leliana love ribbing. Some of her fondest memories include the traded teases that she had with Alistair and Morrigan during their adventure to end the Fifth Blight. Now Leliana turns that love for repartee onto her comrades in the Inquistion; specifically the Commander, though many would see their conversations as bickering instead of banter (and sometimes it is, at that). - The Game Despite the fact that it is blatantly awful, horrendous, and the world would undeniably be better off and safer without it, Leliana still loves the Game that is played across Thedas, seated primarily in Orlais. She takes to navigating its alluring tide pools like a blacksmith would the drawing of wire; it's cathartic, refreshing, a place she can work naturally that demands her attention but also where she can thrive. - Quiet Leliana found the absence of noise daunting until she became a Bard. Then she made it her friend and ally, and grew to think of the quiet as a comfort. In the Lothering Chantry, Leliana's relationship with this concept reached new and religious boundaries when she discovered that the Maker was never more profound or near than in moments of peaceful quiet. Interestingly, while Leliana can move without sound at need, it is not her forte. She is, instead, most skilled at blending in. Being seen, but not remembered, noticed but not acknowledged. - Stories What began as a childhood fixation with stories of romance and fantasy has matured along with Leliana, becoming a genuine and scholarly passion for tales both true and mythic. Leliana knows countless fables and legends, many of which she puts to song either learned or crafted by her own musical prowess. - Pranks Leliana loves a good prank. And a prank war is something she lives for. Whether to even the scales after a slight, or just to liven up things if they become too stale. Friends' and associates' smallclothes could be conveniently misplaced in a public courtyard; a hired escort may be found awaiting a particularly prudish compatriot in their chambers. None of these can be traced back to Leliana, of course, save for the sparkle in her eyes and the smirk on her face when confronted. - Birds Nugs are dear to Leliana, but a newer love. She has always adored bird, which in her words are "creatures of grace and beauty, who open their mouths and sing." That love is aided by her role as Spymaster, and her use of them to carry messages. She finds solace and comfort in the company of the Inquisition's birds, which is why she prefers to work out of Skyhold's rookery. DISLIKES - Airs Leliana understand the necessity and use of facades. As a Bard she almost always had to veil herself in falsehoods and treacherous mystique. She sees these as tools and worthy ones in her craft and the craft of her agents. However, Leliana chafes when others try to use them against her, thinking that she is so easily fooled. On a deeper level, she doesn't like when people try to trick themselves (especially knowingly) and use decided delusion to cope or hide from truth. - False modesty When others boast or brandish their vanity, wealth, fortune and avarice beneath the false cloak of supposed humility, Leliana becomes exceedingly vexed. This being a common occurrence in nobles and holier-than-thou members of the Chantry, Leliana often encounters the pet peeve. Usually she has to bite her tongue, but sometimes events unfold after the fact that reveal those who are being falsely modesty for what they are. Not that anyone can ever prove Leliana was the cause. - Pretension When Leliana was a lay sister in Lothering, some of the brothers and sisters would speak to her as though their Chant was more pleasing to the Maker. She despises being talked down to, or when others affect an air of superiority due to whatever asinine justification they feel they have; wealth, connections, titles and so on. - Her thighs Leliana isn't fond of her thighs, personally, but "you work with what you have." - Prejudice She believes in equality, that one should be judged based on their actions (or those actions they take to atone for past mistakes), not their race, blood or gender. Leliana is a voice of support for mages, therefor, and elves and tries to put a stop to segregation and racial rifts where she can. - Fereldan cuisine Leliana cannot stomach Fereldan food which, in her mind, is all some uniform color of grey. She grew upon the delicacies of Orlais, and then the humble but nutritious diet of a sister within the Chantry. Leliana thinks many Fereldens would have the common sense detest their own menu, but they have nothing decent to compare it too. | NEGATIVE - Stubborn Leliana doesn't like to back down once she's taken a stance. This mostly is reflected in her personal life, where she's hard to argue with when she's set her mind, and mulishly determined. Occasionally it floods over into her professional career and Leliana may, rarely but even so, have to be convinced to concede defeat on various fronts by her fellow advisers. - Manipulative Within the world of shadows and secrets that Leliana has made her nest, manipulation is the name of the game. If quiet bribes, murmured threats or careful flattery don't move pieces the way she wills, Leliana will loose dart and dagger to reach the same ends. It's second nature for her, and Leliana may not notice that she's begun to manipulate people around her on a more domestic level... Or sometime she does notice, but doesn't care. - Secretive Leliana is a cultivator of secrets. Secrets hold hidden knowledge, which holds power. Therefor it's entirely reasonable that she has become a secretive person. Unfortunately this can make her keen on withholding things from her fellows that should be shown the light and gives her the reputation for always knowing what it is you don't wish she knew; a reputation she has rightfully earned and maintains. - Insistent Intermingled with her determined attitude, Leliana can push matters to the point of exhaustion. Bleeding a horse dry, as the saying goes. She doesn't care if she's being overly-insistent, too. Even if this has a tendency to make others cross with her. On top of all the other weights she carries, Leliana doesn't flounder beneath a companion's grudge. - Self-critical Leliana is in charge of a tremendous deal, and every single choice she makes, no matter how seemingly trivial, can have dire consequences. She accepts this and carries on anyway, but when she errs - and she is only human, so she does make wrong moves - she is severely hard on herself afterward. Often those close to Leliana will have to point out that she's being absurd after one of these missteps or else she's prone to lapse into apathetic, cold spells to try to make up for her mistakes. - Invasive When one is trying to trade secrets, and conducting one of the most extensive spy networks in all of Thedas, personal boundaries lose their strength. Leliana either struggles to distinguish when she's crossing lines with those of the Inquisition, or sometimes she's so desensitized to the shame that's normally associated with intruding on people's privacy that she doesn't care what lines she's toeing. Neither of these end with her being looked favorably upon by her compatriots. - Cynical Leliana works in shadow. She handles that which is too cruel or abhorrent to see the light of day, as a Bard, then the Left Hand of the Divine and finally the Spymaster for the Inquisition. These jobs require one to be brutally, totally and entirely honest with themselves and their limitations as well as those in their employ. Leliana believe she's a realist who acknowledges the dark underbelly and unsavory elements of others, and exploits them. Or else observes a battle or dilemma frankly without any room for delusion. This may be true in some form, but Leliana does dip lower than these assertions into realms of cynicism on a regular basis. Even if she'd deny such. - Guilted Everyone with a soul is haunted in some way by the dark seeds of their past. Leliana has more than most, at that. Since her time in Lothering Leliana acts to atone for her origins in the eyes of the Maker. More directly than that, Leliana is deeply affected by every death, loss of life or even misfortune that her action or inaction occurs. She understand the prices to pay in her line of work and pays them in spite of them, and she usually does not let others see how deep bad news strikes her but it does. When Leliana feels to blame, partly or entirely, for death or destruction, she plunges, quiet and solitary, into wells of guilt. - Ruthless at need When Leliana became the Left Hand of the Divine, she accepted the role she was to play to further the Chantry and sustain the Maker's will. It is never an easy part and its demands on body, soul and conscience are without compare. Leliana lowers herself to this responsibility, and the dark lens that she must view events through to do her job well is known to let virtues such as mercy or forgiveness slip by unnoticed. Leliana can be outright ruthless when it is required of her. - Superficial For all her shrewdness and empathy, Leliana was still raised an Orlesian. She puts too much stock in wardrobe or color coordination, and is too judgmental of those who lack either or both. |

[PTab=BIOGRAPHY]
THE NIGHT IS LONG AND THE PATH IS DARK
orlesian origins
Leliana was born to a Ferelden woman named Oisine who was in the employ of an Orleisian noblewoman, Lady Cecilie Vasseur. One of her earliest and fondest memories includes standing in the gardens of Lady Cecilie's estate with Oisine; the scent of sweet orange, lavender and her mother's linen dress. Lady Cecilie and her household were in Ferelden during their Rebellion, and after its end in Ferelden's favor, the noblewoman moved her family and staff back to her lands in Orlais; Lelian and Oisine included. Shortly after her fourth birthday, Leliana's mother passed away. Rather than any other course, Lady Cecilie took it upon herself to raise Leliana in Oisine's absence, treating her like a daughter.[break][break]Losing her mother brought a deep depression upon Leliana, alas, who had always been a radiant and cheerful girl before. To try to lift her spirits, Lady Cecilie gave Leliana whatever it is she asked for, and that was books. So when still very young Leliana founded what would be a life-long love for fables, stories, legends and myths of any origin, especially if they were in the form of a song. She would go so far as to coax stories from Cecilie's elven servants, whom she never looked down upon. Tutors were hired by Lady Cecilie to foster this passion within Leliana, molding her into a talented dancer and songstress. Leliana would often practice her dancing on the stone terrace of Cecilie's villa on the shores of the Waking Sea.[break]
marjolaine
In Lady Cecilie's care, Leliana was raised in high Orlesian society and learned much about the court's inner workings and cultural trappings. When she was sixteen, Leliana made her first trip to Val Royeaux to attend a gathering with Lady Cecilie. Here she met and was immediately entranced by Marjolaine; a widowed socialite and patroness of the arts who filled the very air around her with charisma. It would seem that Leliana, too, left an impression on Marjolaine, because after the soiree she began calling on Lady Cecilie, who was by then quite old. When Cecilie would grow tired during the visits, she would leave Leliana to entertain Marjolaine, who was dazzled by the older woman's daring and worldliness. The two became quick friends, and Leliana found she wanted to do anything to impress her new companion.[break][break]Marjolaine took Leliana on hunting trip and gave her her first bow. While teaching her how to use it, Leliana accidentally wounded the hart that they were tracking instead of killing it. Too shaken to put the creature out of its misery, she watched as Marjolaine efficiently and deftly finished the job. Later that summer Leliana began paying Marjolaine visits at her estate in Val Royeaux. During these, Marjolaine began teaching Leliana the arts of combat, manipulation and subterfuge; the skill of the Bard. Though at the time these lessons were cleverly disguised by Marjolaine to seem, at first, like the idle amusements of noblewomen. During this time the two women's relationship became intimate. Eventually the veil of etiquette fell away from Marjolaine's teachings and Leliana acknowledged them for what they were, taking to her training as a Bard with talent and vigor.[break]
leliana's song
Marjolaine began acting as contractor, manager and Bard-master to Leliana, finding her jobs across Thedas and dispatching her to them. Through Marjolaine Leliana also met a dwarf named Tug and a mage named Sketch, who became her companions in these quests. Leliana delighted in the freedom and intrigue of the jobs that her mentor gave her, but Marjolaine was becoming increasingly wary of Leliana, whose abilities as a Bard were flourishing and quickly rising to Marjolaine's level. Ultimately, when Leliana was planting papers for a job Marjolaine gave her in Denerim, she realized that the documents were sensitive Orlesian material and therefor possessing them was treasonous. Treason was punished so heavily in Orlais that Leliana, out of genuine worry for Marjolaine's safety, confronted her mentor and asked to steal them back. During the attempt, Marjolaine betrayed Leliana, Tug and Sketch to Harwen Raleigh, framing them. They were all beaten, imprisoned, abused and tortured; Leliana sustaining a deep knife wound.[break][break]With the help of an Orlesian Chantry Mother, Dorothea, Leliana was able to escape Harwen Raleigh's prison after a full week wasting there. During her outbreak, Leliana found and rescued Sketch and a Ferelden named Silas Corthwaite. Tragically, Tug did not survive the dungeon, having goaded a fatal level of abuse from their jailors so that they wouldn't have time to harm Sketch. Mother Dorothea explained to Leliana that Marjolaine had seduced her to acquire the papers Leliana was planting. After she retrieved them for the Revered Mother, Dorothea told them where to find Marjolaine and Raleigh.[break][break]Together the three escapees tracked down Marjolaine and Harwen, confronted them and killed the latter, though the former escaped. Betrayed by the woman she loved, fearful of Marjolaine's influence and continued attempts to kill her and inspired by the Revered Mother, Leliana passed quietly to Lothering and became a lay sister at the Chantry there.[break]
the fifth blight
Leliana remained an unassuming Chantry lay sister in Lothering for two years. During this time she became deeply religious and cultivated an unshakable faith. There she received what she believed to be a vision given from the Maker Himself and interpreted it to mean that she was to assist someone in ending the Fifth Blight. That someone Leliana found in the Hero of Ferelden, who she intercepted at the tavern in Lothering. Leliana joined the Hero's group on their quest to put an end to the Blight. During the particular quest to acquire the Urn of Sacred Ashes in Haven, the guardian of the Urn accused Leliana of fabricating her vision, that the Maker only ever spoke to one person; Andraste. Leliana denied this, but was made deeply dismayed by its assertion. Later, a band of assassins sought out Leliana, the Hero, and their party. When defeated, they revealed that Marjolaine had hired them to slay Leliana, and that she was in Denerim. Emboldened by the Hero, Leliana, accompanied by her new companions, went to Denerim and confronted her there.[break][break]Miraculously, after confronting Marjolaine, Leliana allowed her old mentor to live, focusing on the teachings of the Chant of Light, making her peace with her past without shackling herself to it by obtaining revenge. Marjolaine passed back into Orlais, but made no promises not to try to kill Leliana again. At length, and after countless quests and grave peril, Leliana aided the Hero of Ferelden in ending the Fifth Blight and was present for the coronation of Alistair as the King of Ferelden.[break]
left hand of the divine
With Revered Mother Dorothea's ascension to Divine Justinia V, Leliana was appointed as her Left Hand; a more sinister role involving espionage, spycraft and subterfuge that Justinia had faith Leliana could handle, given her past. She struck up a dear friendship and working relationship with Cassandra Pentaghast; Justinia's Right Hand. Divine Justinia dispatched Leliana to Kirkwall under the assumed name "Sister Nightingale" to assess whether or not an Exalted March against the city would suppress the rising conflict between templars and mages therein. Leliana was tracking down a sinister group of appostates when she encountered Hawke and Prince Sebastian Vael in the Viscount's Keep. There she requested that they pass a message on to Grand Cleric Elthina, to flee Kirkwall and seek refuge in the Grand Cathedral in Val Royeaux at the Divine's personal invitation.[break][break]Later Leliana attended a party at Chateau Haine, a personal guest of Duke Prosper de Montfort, and there encountered an old associate of hers; Tallis, a Qunari agent of the Ben-Hassrath. Even after the climax of the conflict in Kirkwall, the templars and mages remained at odds and Leliana continued to pursue solutions at Justinia's behest. At a ball held for the Divine, Leliana first met Knight Captain Evangeline and was present when Rhys, Wynne, Pharamond and Adrian were granted an audience with Justinia upon their return from Adamant Fortress. In fact, Leliana personally restrained Lord Seeker Lambert during this meeting, keeping him from attacking Rhys. Leliana played a part in the raid of the White Spire to free captive mages, though her presence there first revealed to Seeker Lambert that the Divine was conspiring against the Templar Order.[break][break]Leliana played the role as Justinia's representative and met with Empress Celene I at the University of Orlais to discuss the rising mage/templar tension. During this meeting, Celene revealed that she was aware of both Leliana and Justinia's respective dark pasts and demanded that the Divine make an official statement on the mage/templar conflict within three weeks, or else she would not be able to keep the nobles of her court from interfering - a proposal that Leliana took to Justinia dutifully. Leliana soon returned to Celene carrying the Divine's will: that for helping to quell the chaos between mages and templars, Celene would end the elven revolt in Halamshiral. Doing so would force Celene to demonstrate the same control over her own affairs that she had pressured the Divine into doing of hers. Though regretting the tactics Celene would need to employ, Leliana wished her good luck and departed.[break]
inquisition
After tragedy struck at the Divine Conclave, shattering attempts to mend the conflict between mages and templars; taking Justinia from her; opening a hole in the sky and Fade and causing related rifts to appear; and revealing a strange elven mage with what was entitled an "anchor" in his hand, Leliana helped to found the Inquisition. Alongside Cassandra, Cullen Rutherford and Josephine Montilyet, Leliana helped to build the Inquisition in capacity as Spymaster. Leliana proved invaluable to the Inquistion, employing her vast network of spies across Thedas and offering council of a more cunning sort to the Inquisitor. When Haven was lost after Corypheus' attack, Leliana felt mostly to blame. Having become cold and jaded, feeling betrayed by the Maker and doubtful of her faith due to the Conclave's end, Haven catalyzed her bitterness and when the Inquisition was moved to Skyhold she was in a dark place. Through the combination of the Inquisitor and the rest of their group, Leliana was helped to return to a softer place, to renew her faith in the Chant and overcome her mourning without being frozen by it. During a quest with the Inquisitor after a posthumous letter was given to Leliana by Justinia's hand, she was further softened, convinced to show mercy to a turncoat Sister Natalie there and touched by a note from Justinia that she found afterward: "The Left Hand should lay down her burden." Which translated as Justinia releasing Leliana from service to the Divine, fearful that she was using her. Ultimately Corypheus was defeated and the Inquisition victorious.[break]
tresspasser
Leliana participated in the events of the Exalted Council, two years after Corypheus' defeat. Leliana privately conversed with the Inquisitor as they toured the Winter Palace- during which she told the Inquisitor that she could no longer appreciate its majestic beauty knowing that it was built from the suffering of the downtrodden. Lastly, Leliana discussed the fate of the Inquisition. Pointing out the fear and ire the Inquisition's influence drew, Leliana advised that the Inquisition should lay down their arms and find new ways to work for the good of Thedas without the use of soldiers and spies. She tells the Inquisitor that she would be honored to stand beside them no matter the outcome. Leliana and her agents continued to support the Inquisition. Though Solas continued to elude her, Leliana relayed to the Inquisitor that she had been receiving reports of Sentinel elves being active in the Tirashan. Leliana was the first to notify the Inquisitor of a dead Qunari warrior in the Winter Palace, implicating a Qunari conspiracy and handled the removal of gaatlok barrels meant to assassinate the leaders of southern Thedas.[break][break]Leliana continued to act as the Inquisition's spymaster in its final months as an independent organization. During this time, she shared many of her responsibilities with her most trusted agents, including Charter, Rector, and Harding. Many believed that Leliana feared what lay on the horizon and was grooming successors in anticipation of the challenges ahead. She continues in her capacity as Spymaster to this day, even though the Inquisition's size is greatly less than what it once was.
